Shield quadrants represent members of the United Kingdom: 3 lions for England, 1 lion for Scotland, and a harp for Northern Ireland. This design is surrounded by a legend reading 'FID:DEF IND:IMP' above, with 'HALF CROWN' and the date below.

The obverse features the bare head of King George VI facing left, with the legend: 'GEORGIVS VI D:G:BR:OMN:REX'
